Lawrence (Larry) J. Sher
Retirement Design and Compliance

Mr. Sher is a leader in the U.S. actuarial profession and a nationally recognized expert on innovative retirement programs, particularly cash balance plans. He is often called upon to provide expert testimony in complex ERISA and retirement plan disputes.

Mr. Sher is a Fellow of the Society of Actuaries, an Enrolled Actuary under ERISA, a Member of the American Academy of Actuaries, and a Fellow of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries.

Mr. Sher served as a member and vice chair of the Actuarial Standards Board, the group that promulgates standards for actuaries practicing in the U.S. He also has served as president of the Conference of Consulting Actuaries and has served as a member of the board of directors of the American Academy of Actuaries as well as vice chair of its Pension Practice Council. Mr. Sher also originated the annual “Gray Book” initiative that for several years obtained informal guidance from the IRS on a wide range of technical issues not addressed in formal guidance.

Prior to joining The Terry Group, Mr. Sher held various leadership positions, including the chief actuary role, in the actuarial consulting industry.
